Starting Girls Flag Football: A Family Guide

A first season should give an athlete room to learn, ask questions and enjoy being part of a team. Start by choosing the right environment for her age, experience and interests.

Choose the right starting point

Compare a local league with a national travel team. A league provides a recurring local team experience; travel programs may involve additional competition and travel commitments. Ask about eligibility, coaching, practices and the season schedule before choosing.

Read the program details

Check the location, age division, dates, cost and what is included. Maryland’s November winter program is a four-week NFL FLAG league with jerseys and flags provided. Other programs can have different equipment and registration requirements; use their current program page as your reference.

Prepare for the first session

Ask the coach what to bring and which footwear and protective equipment the venue requires. Bring water, arrive with time to check in and share relevant participation information through the program’s secure registration process. Do not post private athlete details in public comments.

Build skills one step at a time

Receiving, passing, movement, communication and learning team responsibilities all take practice. Encourage questions and effort. An athlete does not need to commit to one position before she has had a chance to learn.

Find a program near you

Explore Maryland, Connecticut, South Carolina or Brazil. The regional pages connect families to available programs, team opportunities and upcoming announcements.
